How the Kinneret tackles the country’s water shortage

The Kinneret Academic College established a water engineering department to take on the country’s rain shortage - here’s how.

During CTech’s trip to the Kinneret Innovation Center for its new Out of the Bubble series, Dr. Ran Suckeveriene, Head of the Water Industry Engineering Department at the Kinneret Academic College, discussed some of the challenges that the country has faced in making sure there is enough water for citizens, agriculture, and how it managed to get an advantage over other countries.

 

“In Israel, almost 70% of the water here is desalinated,” explained Dr. Ran Suckeverien, meaning that mineral components are taken away from saline water to make it safe for consumption. “You don’t have any dependents on the weather conditions, nevertheless other countries have more problems than we have because we started dealing with this problem back in the 1960s, almost 60 years ago.”

 

In the 2020s, concerns have shifted towards how to manage water correctly and monitor water quality from a distance. “One of the problems with water management is how do you know the amount of water you have now, or how much water you need to supply at any given moment… it involves a lot of new approaches, like using big data and using new software and programmers that can predict what is the amount of water needed in certain locations at a certain point of time,” he added.
