"Microsoft provides its customers with the confidence to use AI tools responsibly"

Ben Haklai, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Israel, spoke at Calcalist and Microsoft’s AIsrael conference about the importance of data security, organizational compliance and protection of intellectual property when developing products.

"There are several principles guiding us in transitioning to the world of artificial intelligence. Today, much is spoken about a revolution that will impact the industry - from improving user and employee experience to enhancing our organizational perception of innovation," said Ben Haklai, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Israel, speaking at Calcalist and Microsoft’s AIsrael conference this week.
According to Haklai, "It all started with our partnership with OpenAI, but it took us months to reach the market. The reason is our diverse customer base. Microsoft’s clients include giant companies, governments, and security bodies - and we take their considerations into account. We consider their concerns about AI and receive feedback on four areas that, from the customers' perspective, need attention: data security, liability, organizational compliance, and intellectual property. Each issue is important, and in accordance with the requirements, we develop products.

"We told customers that we’re building an environment where their data remains theirs and is protected by advanced tools. Their data cannot serve competitors, and in addition, the data cannot leak. Beyond that, at the individual user level, [Microsoft’s] Copilot allows access only to the user. It is impossible to access areas of information that the user cannot use."
Haklai added, "Regarding responsibility in artificial intelligence, this is an area that we have been leading for years and developing for a long time. It is important for us to ensure that technology development and accessibility are done in accordance with our principles: fairness, reliability, safety, and privacy. For example, today there is transparency in our product - when using models, you can see where the information came from. You can check the outputs. Furthermore, the human factor in the process is important to us.
"It’s impossible to talk about large organizations without discussing 'compliance' - meaning that models will meet a wide set of standards in the industry. We support hundreds of standards, and regarding intellectual property, it is a complex issue, and there is a lot of litigation surrounding it because the only party that can regulate intellectual property is a state, and this can vary among countries. And there is uncertainty. What we can do is meet our customers and tell them: if you’re sued, we’ll handle the lawsuit. Microsoft provides its customers with the confidence to use tools responsibly, something we do because we embed filters at the model level."
