Facebook, Instagram and Messenger suffer widespread outage

Meta faces widespread user complaints as multiple platforms experience outages.

Users of some of the world’s most widely used social media platforms reported widespread disruptions on Friday, affecting Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, the flagship consumer services owned by Meta.
Reports of problems surged according to outage-tracking website Downdetector, which recorded more than 80,000 reports related to Facebook by approximately 10:15 a.m. Eastern Time. Users also reported issues with Instagram and Messenger, suggesting that the disruption extended across multiple products within Meta’s ecosystem.

Meta’s social media platforms rank among the most heavily used digital services globally, serving as primary channels for personal communication, content distribution and advertising. As a result, outages often trigger a rapid wave of user reports and scrutiny over the resilience of the infrastructure supporting these networks.
It was not immediately clear what caused the disruption or how long it would last.
Meta confirmed the outage, with the company’s Vice President of Communications, Andy Stone, writing on X: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”
