Akamai completes $205 million LayerX acquisition as browser security push enters next phase
The deal, first announced in May, extends Akamai’s Zero Trust platform into AI-era browser visibility and control.
Akamai Technologies has completed its $205 million acquisition of LayerX, a secure enterprise browser security provider, finalizing a deal that was first announced in May.
The completion of the transaction marks a further step in Akamai’s expansion of its Zero Trust security platform, which already includes network segmentation, Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and DNS security capabilities used by thousands of global enterprises.
LayerX adds a layer of visibility and control directly inside the browser, enabling organizations to monitor how users interact with web content, file uploads, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications across both managed and unmanaged environments. The platform is designed to work with existing browsers rather than replace them, effectively extending enterprise security into everyday web usage.
Akamai said the combined offering will help organizations govern how employees, partners, and supply chain ecosystems interact with AI applications, reflecting growing concern over the rapid adoption of generative AI tools in corporate workflows.
Founded in 2022 by Or Eshed and David Weisbrot, LayerX has raised $45 million from investors including Glilot Capital, Dell Technologies Capital, and Jump Capital. Following the acquisition, LayerX employees, including the founders, joined Akamai’s cybersecurity division. Akamai said the LayerX business is expected to have annual recurring revenue at year end of approximately $10 million.
The deal adds to a series of acquisitions Akamai has made in Israel in recent years as it deepens its cybersecurity operations in the country. Among the most notable were the acquisition of Guardicore in 2021 for approximately $600 million, which became a central pillar of Akamai’s global Zero Trust operations, and the acquisition of Noname Security in 2024 for approximately $450 million. Akamai also acquired NeoSec in 2023, alongside earlier Israeli acquisitions including Cotendo in 2012 and ChameleonX in 2019.
