Akamai in advanced talks to acquire Israeli startup LayerX for $250 million
The browser security company raised $45 million from investors including Glilot and Dell Technologies Capital. Akamai has acquired five Israeli companies to date, including Noname Security and Guardicore.
Akamai Technologies is in advanced negotiations to acquire Israeli cybersecurity startup LayerX Security for approximately $250 million, according to sources familiar with the matter. LayerX has raised $45 million to date from investors including Jump Capital, Glilot Capital Partners and Dell Technologies Capital.
LayerX currently employs more than 80 people. The company develops a platform that enables security managers to secure work conducted through existing enterprise browsers. Its security extension can be installed within minutes without user intervention and is compatible with widely used browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari.
LayerX was founded in 2022 by CEO Or Eshed and CTO David Weisbrot, who served together in military technology units focused on cyber offense and defense systems. In 2017, Eshed helped expose one of the largest attack campaigns ever identified on the Chrome browser, involving tens of millions of compromised browsers. The investigation ultimately contributed to the identification and prosecution of the hackers behind the campaign.
For Akamai, the acquisition would further deepen its presence in Israel, which has become a strategic hub for the company’s cybersecurity operations. The American cloud and cybersecurity giant has acquired five Israeli companies over the years, with several becoming a core part of its development activity in the country.
Among Akamai’s most notable Israeli acquisitions were Noname Security, acquired in 2024 for approximately $350 million, and Guardicore, acquired in 2021 for around $600 million.
