Anthropic closes colossal $65 billion funding round at $900 billion valuation
The AI giant topped OpenAI as it attracts hyperscalers and global investors as Israeli insurers expand their positions.
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced on Thursday that it has raised $65 billion in Series H funding led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, valuing the company at $900 billion.
The round was co-led by Capital Group, Coatue, D1 Capital Partners, GIC, ICONIQ, and XN. Significant investors in this round include AMP PBC, Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, D.E. Shaw Ventures, DST Global, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Insight Partners, Jane Street, Lightspeed Venture Partners, MGX, NTTVC, NX1 Capital, Situational Awareness LP, T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc., and Temasek. It also includes $15 billion of previously committed investments from hyperscalers, including $5 billion from Amazon.
Calcalist has also learned that two Israeli insurance companies that previously invested in Anthropic also participated in the current round. Clal Insurance will invest $120 million. Last September, Clal invested $55 million at a valuation of $180 billion, recording a five-fold paper profit in nine months. In February, Clal invested an additional $10 million as part of the company’s fundraising. Overall, Clal is currently sitting on paper gains of more than $235 million on its investment in less than a year.
Migdal Insurance invested $15 million in September and $60 million in February. In the current round, Migdal is investing an additional $50 million and is currently showing paper gains of about $150 million on its investment.
Anthropic said that its run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion earlier this month. This comes after the company raised $30 billion in February this year at a valuation of $380 billion, meaning the company’s valuation has more than doubled in just a few months.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees led by Dario Amodei, Anthropic has become one of the leading companies in the AI sector. Its models are designed to transform workflows in areas such as programming and cybersecurity. By comparison, OpenAI raised a funding round in March at a valuation of $852 billion.
