Wizz Air adds dozens of weekly flights from Israel
The Hungarian low-cost airline is relaunching five routes from Ben Gurion Airport and increasing frequencies on 11 others. The expansion will add 35 weekly flights.
Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air is expanding its operations in Israel, adding dozens of weekly flights from Ben Gurion Airport. The company is relaunching five routes and increasing frequencies on 11 existing routes, boosting seat capacity from Israel to destinations across Europe and increasing competition for passengers.
The routes being relaunched this week are Catania, with four weekly flights; London Gatwick, with five; Venice, with three; Cluj, with two; and Iași, with two. Together, the five routes will add 16 weekly flights.
At the same time, Wizz Air is increasing frequencies on several existing routes. Flights to Budapest will rise from 14 to 21 per week, Rome from 12 to 14, Milan from seven to 14, and Bucharest from 11 to 14.
The company is also increasing flights to Bratislava, from five to seven per week; Naples, from five to seven; Sofia, from six to seven; Varna, from two to three; Athens, from five to seven; Vilnius, from two to four; and Warsaw, from four to five.
Based on the frequencies listed above, the increases across the 11 existing routes amount to 19 additional weekly flights, on top of the 16 weekly flights being added through the five relaunched routes.
The expansion comes as flight supply from Ben Gurion Airport continues to be affected by the security situation and by decisions by foreign airlines to reduce or suspend their operations in Israel. Wizz Air's expansion could help increase seat capacity to Europe and partially offset reductions on routes where other carriers have scaled back or halted flights.
For passengers, the changes mean more flight options and higher frequencies on several popular European routes. For airlines operating to and from Israel, the expansion also means greater competition, particularly on destinations where Wizz Air is adding multiple weekly flights.
