Zuckerberg assembling elite 50-person team to pursue AGI

According to Bloomberg, the move follows Meta’s internal frustration with Llama 4 and delayed flagship model, as rivals race toward human-level AI.

Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire CEO of Meta Platforms, is assembling a team of experts to pursue so-called “artificial general intelligence” (AGI), machines capable of matching or surpassing human intelligence, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.
The new AGI-focused initiative is reportedly linked to an investment of more than $10 billion in Scale AI. According to Bloomberg, Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang is expected to join the AGI group once the deal is finalized.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.
Zuckerberg’s decision to personally recruit around 50 people for the project, including a new head of AI research, is said to stem in part from dissatisfaction with the performance and reception of Meta’s latest large language model, Llama 4.
Last month, Meta postponed the release of its flagship “Behemoth” AI model due to internal concerns about its capabilities, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
Meanwhile, rivals such as OpenAI are also making strategic changes to attract additional investment in their pursuit of AGI.
