Tech TLV
"Our commitment to Israel has not changed, we're still looking for employees"

In an interview as part of Calcalist's Tech TLV conference, Emmanuel Lanzmann, Global Head of Quantitative Modeling and Technology at Millennium, shares why the $61B+ AUM global alternative investment management firm opened an office in the heart of the Startup Nation and where the field is headed.

"When most people think of Israel, they think of 'the startup nation' - and rightfully so. Israel has an amazing technological ecosystem, but people are also motivated to think big, be creative, and think outside the box," Emmanuel Lanzmann, Global Head of Quantitative Modeling and Technology and Millennium said in an interview as part of Calcalist's Tech TLV conference.
Millennium is a global alternative investment management firm which manages more than $61 billion AUM and employs over 5,500 people worldwide. Since establishing its presence in Israel in 2019, the company has expanded and continues to hire for its Tel Aviv office.
When asked about the connection between investments and tech, the Geneva-based Lanzmann said, “I believe Millennium is at the cutting edge of two industries: finance and technology. Technology is not just a function that helps in running the office. Technology plays a central role in what we do and how we operate, from our investment decisions to execution. 25% of our employees are technologists who work closely with our 300 investment teams, providing them with the technological solutions they need.
As an example of the importance of technology for Millennium, Lanzmann explained that the company invests, among other things, in complex products with different types of risk. "In order to understand and manage the risks properly, advanced mathematical models and sophisticated technology are needed. When you have such models and such technology, it's almost like a new lens through which you see the market. It's like a microscope where you can focus on the microstructures of the market, and like a telescope where you can take a step. Step back and look at the big picture of the market, and maybe uncover connections you didn't see before."
When asked about how the Israeli office is coping these days, Lanzmann said, "This is a challenging time for us, for everyone, but our commitment to Israel as a strategic home for talent, and our commitment to expanding our technological presence in Israel has not changed. In fact, we are still looking for employees and have not stopped since we started."
