Moonshot AI hits $50 billion valuation as it prepares for Hong Kong IPO
The Chinese AI startup has closed its latest private funding round and could seek to raise as much as $5 billion in a first-quarter listing.
Moonshot AI is heading toward one of Hong Kong’s most closely watched technology listings, after closing a private funding round that values the Chinese artificial intelligence company at about $50 billion, according to Bloomberg News.
The valuation marks a dramatic increase from the $31.5 billion price tag attached to the company in a funding round earlier this summer. Moonshot is now preparing for a potential initial public offering in Hong Kong as early as the first quarter of next year, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg.
The company has already begun preparing for the public markets. It could start meeting investors as soon as this month to gauge demand, while discussions over the offering remain ongoing. Moonshot is considering raising as much as $5 billion in the IPO.
If completed at that size and valuation, the listing would place Moonshot among the most significant technology offerings to come to Hong Kong and would provide a public-market test of investor appetite for China’s rapidly developing AI industry.
Moonshot’s rise has been unusually rapid. Founded in early 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former Tsinghua University professor who previously worked at Meta Platforms and Google, the Beijing-based AI lab has emerged as one of the leading names in China’s AI industry. Its backers include Alibaba Group Holding, Tencent Holdings and 5Y Capital.
The company gained international attention in July with the launch of Kimi K3, an open model that, on some metrics, performs nearly on par with leading AI platforms from OpenAI and Anthropic.
That progress is now being reflected in the company’s commercial numbers. Moonshot’s annual recurring revenue, a measure of future sales, is expected to reach $2 billion by December, up from approximately $1 billion currently, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. The company had reached $300 million in ARR as recently as June.
The company has not committed to a final timetable. People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that deliberations are continuing and that the IPO could still be delayed or otherwise change.
Moonshot has nevertheless already assembled much of the financial infrastructure for a potential listing. Bank of America has been added as overall coordinator alongside China International Capital, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs, according to people familiar with the matter. The company has also confidentially filed for the IPO, they said.
