Haifa-based center to close as company restructures global operations.

The center employed about 150 people at its peak and currently employs around 80 ahead of the closure. Shutterfly has been a private company since 2019, when it was acquired by the investment firm Apollo. The shutdown may take place in stages, but the company has already notified employees of the closure of operations. The company has not responded to requests for comment.
Shutterfly is an American company specializing in digital photo printing and personalized products. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in San Jose, California, the company is best known for its platform for creating customized photo albums, greeting cards, calendars, and other personalized gifts.

Shutterfly’s operations in Israel have been significant, spanning two main areas: a technological development center and strategic business collaborations. The company’s presence in Israel began in 2012 with the acquisition of the Haifa-based startup Photoccino for an estimated $10-20 million. The Haifa center became the company’s technology arm until the decision to close it. Shutterfly also recently signed a major deal with HP Indigo worth hundreds of millions of shekels to upgrade its fleet of digital printing presses.
Shutterfly said in response: “In order to streamline the way we work and accelerate the speed at which we deliver for Shutterfly’s customers, we are making changes to our technology teams that will result in the closing of our Haifa office. The consolidated web and app team will be based in the United States.
“This decision was not made lightly, and we’re grateful for the dedication of our Haifa team over the past 14 years. We are committed to supporting the team through this transition, in addition to providing the required hearing opportunities.”
