Anthropic’s $40B funding round at $900B valuation set for imminent announcement
Israeli insurance companies Clal and Migdal participate as AI giant edges closer to IPO path.
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is completing a fundraising round that was first revealed two weeks ago at a valuation of $900 billion. Calcalist has learned that an announcement is expected in the coming hours or tomorrow (Friday). The size of the round is expected to be approximately $40 billion. This comes after the company raised $30 billion in February this year at a valuation of $380 billion, meaning the company’s valuation has more than doubled in just a few months.
The fundraising is being conducted ahead of the company’s planned IPO in October, and is intended to support continued investment in the computing infrastructure required to meet growing demand for its products.
Calcalist has also learned that two Israeli insurance companies that previously invested in Anthropic will also participate in the current round. Clal Insurance will invest $120 million. Last September, Clal invested $55 million at a valuation of $180 billion, recording a five-fold paper profit in nine months. In February, Clal invested an additional $10 million as part of the company’s fundraising. Overall, Clal is currently sitting on paper gains of more than $235 million on its investment in less than a year.
Migdal Insurance invested $15 million in September and $60 million in February. In the current round, Migdal is investing an additional $50 million and is currently showing paper gains of about $150 million on its investment.
The company recently secured two major financing agreements with leading technology companies, although it is not yet clear whether they will participate in the new fundraising round. Google has committed to invest $10 billion in Anthropic at a valuation of $350 billion, with plans to invest an additional $30 billion if the startup meets certain performance targets. Amazon is also investing $5 billion at a valuation of $350 billion, with plans to increase its total investment to $20 billion over time.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees led by Dario Amodei, Anthropic has become one of the leading companies in the AI sector. Its models are designed to transform workflows in areas such as programming and cybersecurity. By comparison, OpenAI raised a funding round in March at a valuation of $852 billion.
