Wix's Base44 launches Base Code to take on Claude Code and Cursor
The new cloud-based development tool lets entire teams work on existing codebases using AI, without requiring local installation.
Wix’s Base44 is announcing the launch of Base Code, a new standalone product that connects existing codebases to a collaborative cloud development environment. The move marks a direct entry into competition with leading AI development tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.
The new product enables teams to connect code repositories from GitHub. Base Code's AI agent then learns the codebase and automatically sets up a full cloud environment for it. The agent can handle complex repositories, provision databases and infrastructure, and generate a live preview of the application. From there, any team member can modify the code using natural-language chat, view changes in real time, and submit them as code updates through pull requests, while adhering to the organization's existing developer review and approval workflows.
Many organizations currently face bottlenecks because even minor code changes require direct involvement from developers. While developers are diverted from core tasks, product, design, and operations teams are forced to wait. Base Code addresses this by providing a cloud environment accessible through a browser or mobile device, eliminating the need for local installation. The platform offers an instant preview, the ability to choose between different AI models, and real-time collaboration for product managers, designers, and QA specialists working alongside engineers.
The tool also includes enterprise-grade security features, including secret-key encryption and permission controls that restrict imports to approved repositories.
Speaking with Calcalist, Yoav Orlev, Base44's Chief Product Officer, explained the key differentiator compared with competitors: "With other tools, a developer downloads the software to their personal computer and views changes only locally. Once finished, handing off the changes to the product manager can consume valuable time or require an in-person meeting. We take the code, analyze it in the cloud, and prepare everything needed for execution. The result is a workspace similar to Figma, but designed for developers and the entire team, where everyone can collaborate on the same code simultaneously."
