“I think growth has regained its top priority among startups,” said Rotem Shacham, Director at growth equity firm PSG. After a period marked by investors prioritising capital efficiency and profitability from their portfolio companies, Shacham expressed that “I think we're definitely seeing a shift back to prioritizing growth,” although she caveats, “It's not 100 percent versus zero percent, right? It's more of a balance.”
Shacham spoke with CTech’s Amy Shapiro during the Summer Cocktail event in Tel Aviv hosted by Fusion VC, an event which brought together some of the country’s leading investors.
Discussing whether Israel will continue to retain its competitive edge in traditional strongholds like cyber and fintech, Shacham maintained that the country is “number one in cyber and will continue to hold that for the foreseeable future.” Yet, she contends that “we're definitely seeing an expansion into other sectors, quantum, defense tech.” Similarly, in these sectors Israel is in many ways “leading the pack,” notes Shacham. “Hopefully we'll be able to build something like we have in cyber in these sectors as well,” she said.
