Israel Innovation Authority VP: “Israel can be the world’s most advanced country in autonomous public transport”

“If this project fails, then at least we tried. But if we succeed, we will probably change Israel and the world,” said Sagi Dagan, VP and Head of Strategy at the IIA

“We invest $1.5 billion shekels (approximately $437 million) a year, mostly in startups. But what interests us most of all is innovative technologies,” Sagi Dagan, Vice President and Head of Strategy at the Israel Innovation Authority said during the Tech TLV conference on Tuesday.
“For example we announced a project for autonomous public transport. Electric public transport is one of the keys to changing urban life and significantly reducing emissions, housing prices, and traffic. In order to have a lot more public transport there is a need for many more drivers. The government currently subsidizes the cost of drivers, so we started a project together with the Ministry of Transport and Ayalon Highways in which we are testing driverless buses in public transport lanes.”

Dagan said that within two years Israel is set to be the most advanced country in the world when it comes to autonomous public transport. “We take on risky projects and find a market fit and business model. If this project fails, then at least we tried. But if we succeed, we will probably change Israel and the world.”
