Suitcases with over $1.3 million in cash seized in home of Hamas official in Gaza
The IDF found the cash in two suitcases in an abandoned house in the Gaza Strip, along with many weapons belonging to the terrorist organization
The IDF revealed on Monday that it discovered two suitcases containing five million shekels (approximately $1.37 million) in cash on a table in the living room of the home of one of the senior members of the terrorist organization Hamas in Jabaliya.
According to the IDF spokesman, in addition to the huge amount of cash seized in the operation, many weapons were also found in the house. It was not disclosed who the senior official was.
Last week, the "Financial Times" reported on a secret operation to transfer NIS 180 million ($49.3 million) in cash from the north of the Gaza Strip to the south. The operation was conducted under a veil of secrecy during the ceasefire between Israel and the terrorist organization. Heavy security was assigned specifically to the money transfer, which was carried out with the knowledge of Israel.
The cash pool, which included around 900,000 NIS 200 bills with a total weight of one ton, was collected from two branches of the Bank of Palestine located in the north of the Gaza Strip. According to the report, the transfer made it possible to refill the six ATM machines that are still operating in the south and center of the Strip.
Earlier in the war, Bank of Palestine officials took their private cars to branches that stopped functioning due to the war to withdraw cash from the safes and ATM machines to keep it in circulation.
