OpenAI eyes $13B in revenue this year, $174B by 2030—and a future beyond ChatGPT

Internal figures reveal a dramatic shift toward AI agents and new monetization models.

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI expects its revenue to grow more than 250% this year, reaching $13 billion, according to a report by The Information, based on data the company disclosed to potential investors. In 2023, OpenAI recorded $3.7 billion in revenue—nearly quadruple its earnings from the previous year.
OpenAI projects that its revenue will continue to grow sharply in the coming years, reaching $125 billion by 2029 and $174 billion in 2030. The company also expects to incur $46 billion in expenses over the next four years, with a transition to positive cash flow projected for 2029.

While most of OpenAI’s current revenue comes from ChatGPT—expected to generate $8 billion this year, or about 61.5% of total revenue—the company anticipates that by the end of the decade, its main revenue drivers will be AI agents (autonomous tools that perform tasks based on user instructions) and other yet-to-be-launched products.
Estimates suggest that ChatGPT alone will generate $50 billion in revenue by 2029, accounting for roughly 40% of the company’s total projected income that year. The nature of the upcoming products remains unclear, but according to The Information, OpenAI executives are exploring monetization strategies that may include selling advertising or taking commissions on transactions initiated through ChatGPT or AI agents.
