
Tricentis acquires Israeli AI startup Tabnine in deal estimated at tens of millions of dollars
One of the earliest AI coding assistants will bring its enterprise context technology to Tricentis' platform as software testing enters the era of autonomous AI agents.
Tricentis, the enterprise software testing company, has acquired Israeli AI coding startup Tabnine in a deal estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars, bringing one of the earliest pioneers in AI-assisted software development into its expanding platform for AI-powered software testing.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
For Tabnine, the acquisition marks the latest chapter in a journey that began more than a decade ago, long before generative AI became mainstream. Founded in 2013 as Codota by CEO Dror Weiss and CTO Prof. Eran Yahav, the company built AI tools designed to help developers write code more efficiently. In 2019 it acquired Canadian startup Tabnine and adopted its name, positioning itself as one of the earliest commercial AI coding assistants, years before GitHub Copilot and the explosion of generative AI.
The company has raised $55 million from investors including OurCrowd, Telstra Ventures, Atlassian Ventures, Elaia, Headline, Hetz Ventures, Khosla Ventures and TPY Capital.
Last year, Tabnine reduced its workforce, laying off 15 of its 80 employees as it shifted resources toward enterprise AI products.
That strategic focus ultimately became the company's biggest asset.
In recent years, Tabnine has increasingly moved beyond AI code completion to develop what it calls an Enterprise Context Engine, technology designed to give AI systems a continuously updated understanding of an organization's software architecture, coding standards, dependencies and internal knowledge.
According to Tabnine, traditional approaches based on document search or retrieval are insufficient. Instead, AI agents require a continuously evolving understanding of enterprise software systems before they can safely automate development work or make decisions affecting production environments.
That technology will now become part of Tricentis' Agentic Quality Engineering Platform, where it will support AI agents responsible for software testing and quality assurance.
"When we began building the Enterprise Context Engine, we believed enterprise AI had a context problem," Tabnine said in announcing the acquisition. "AI agents couldn't make reliable decisions about systems they didn't truly understand. Searching documents wasn't enough."
The company said joining Tricentis would allow that technology to operate at significantly larger scale as part of a platform dedicated to AI-powered quality engineering.
Existing customers will continue receiving support for Tabnine's products. The companies noted that many enterprise organizations already use both Tabnine and Tricentis, making the integration a natural extension of existing deployments.
