Sony plans major layoffs at Israeli chip R&D hub

Up to a quarter of Hod Hasharon staff may be let go amid global cuts.

Sony’s development center in Israel is embarking on significant layoffs, which are expected to affect dozens of employees, and the number may exceed 100, Calcalist has learned.
The center, located in Hod Hasharon and managed by Nohik Semel, currently employs about 400 people. It was established following Sony’s 2016 acquisition of Israeli chip company Altair for $212 million.

The center develops chips that support advanced wireless standards, with extremely low power consumption and compact size. These chips are used in a wide range of applications, including gas and water meters.
Japan’s Sony has laid off hundreds of employees globally over the past year, mainly from its gaming division.
The company did not respond to Calcalist’s request for comment.
