IDF admits defense failure after Hezbollah precision missile hits key satellite hub deep inside Israel
Strike on Ella Valley communications station caused heavy damage and exposed gaps in Israel’s warning and interception systems.
Following the release of dramatic footage and mounting public pressure to explain the incident, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has officially confirmed that a precision missile launched by Hezbollah on Monday struck and caused “heavy damage” to the Ella Valley (Emek HaEla) satellite station. The facility, located about 160 kilometers from the Lebanese border, serves as a key communications hub for Israel and international media networks.
The strike occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday and involved what Hezbollah described as “quality rockets.” Subsequent reports identified the weapon as a Fateh-110, an Iranian-made precision surface-to-surface missile equipped with a heavy warhead designed to strike strategic infrastructure.
Footage released after the attack shows the moment the missile directly struck the site, which contains around 120 satellite antennas. While the IDF initially remained silent about the incident, it later acknowledged a significant malfunction in the alert system, which prevented sirens from being activated for residents in the surrounding area despite the incoming threat.
According to the IDF’s investigation, several rockets were intercepted during the barrage. However, two projectiles, including the missile that struck the station, penetrated Israeli defenses despite interception attempts.
Heavy damage was caused to the site, which includes a 24/7 monitoring center that supports global broadcasts reaching roughly 95 percent of the world’s population.
The Ella Valley station is the first facility of its kind in Israel and functions as a central junction for international broadcast networks, linking ground centers in London and the United States.
A representative of the Home Front Command addressed the failure after a joint investigation with the Israeli Air Force.
“We have drawn the relevant lessons from last night’s events and made the necessary adjustments to our systems,” the official said, adding that technological and operational changes are being implemented to ensure similar incidents do not occur without advance warning.
While the IDF said the type of threat posed by the missile was not unfamiliar to Israeli defense systems, the successful strike 160 kilometers inside Israeli territory has prompted a broader review of interception capabilities and civilian alert protocols.
In response to the attack, the military said Israeli Air Force jets destroyed the launchers used in the strike shortly afterward.
