“Groundbreaking” Arrow test will preserve Israel’s technological edge, says Defense Ministry chief

Successful trial comes as Israel accelerates production of Arrow interceptors and develops next-generation capabilities to counter evolving ballistic missile threats from Iran and Yemen.

Amid ongoing tensions with Iran and escalating fighting with Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Defense Ministry and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have successfully completed a pre-planned test of the Arrow missile defense system, a milestone that could pave the way for the next generation of Israel's ballistic missile defense capabilities.
The defense establishment did not disclose details about the specific test or identify which Arrow interceptor was launched. The Arrow system has served as Israel's primary defense against ballistic missile attacks from Iran and Yemen since the outbreak of the October 7 war.

"Everything we wanted to test worked perfectly," a senior defense official told Calcalist following an initial assessment of the results.
Defense Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram described the trial as "groundbreaking," saying the capabilities tested would help preserve Israel's technological edge while strengthening the country's independence in defense production.
"We continue to operate in emergency mode to dramatically accelerate the production rate and upgrade the capabilities of the Arrow system," Baram said. "Our inventory of interceptors is growing, and new capabilities are being developed, reflecting decisions we have made over the past year."
IAI CEO Guy Barlev said the system was tested against future threats and that the trial generated significant data that will be used to develop the next generation of missile defense technologies.
"In this test, the system was evaluated against future threats, and substantial information was collected that will be used by our engineers to develop the next generation of air defense technologies," Barlev said.
IAI Chairman Boaz Levy added: "In a world where aerial threats are becoming more complex and diverse, we continue to develop technological solutions that provide a more advanced and powerful response."
The Arrow family of interceptors forms the highest layer of Israel's multi-tiered missile defense network. Arrow 3 is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the Earth's atmosphere and has been heavily used during repeated missile attacks from Iran and Yemen.
Wednesday's test comes as Israel continues to expand both production and development of the Arrow program. IAI is accelerating work on the Arrow 4 interceptor, which is intended to complement and eventually replace the aging Arrow 2 system while incorporating more advanced technologies to address evolving ballistic missile threats. Germany, which has already purchased the Arrow 3 system in deals worth roughly $7 billion, is considered a potential future customer for the Arrow 4 as well.
