Iranian missile damaged secret Israeli intelligence facility in Tel Aviv strike
New report says geospatial intelligence unit was hit in February attack that killed a civilian.
An Iranian intermediate-range ballistic missile evaded Israel’s air defenses on the first day of the joint U.S.-Israeli war against Iran in late February and struck a secretive geospatial intelligence facility hidden inside a residential Tel Aviv neighborhood, according to reporting by Jonathan Broder for SpyTalk.
The February 28 explosion in Tel Aviv’s historic Lev Ha’ir district was widely reported at the time. The blast destroyed a residential apartment building, severely damaged several surrounding structures, and killed Filipina caregiver Mary Anne Velasquez de Vera . What had not been previously reported, however, is that the nearby National Geodetic Institute, located roughly 50 feet away and within the blast radius, suffered damage in the strike.
The institute serves Israel’s military intelligence Unit 9900, the country’s equivalent of the U.S. National Geospatial Agency. It is responsible for collecting geospatial intelligence using satellites and aircraft, supporting military operations with battlefield mapping, reconnaissance, targeting data, terrain analysis, and tracking troop movements.
According to SpyTalk, Israeli military censors prevented any public disclosure of the facility’s proximity to the blast or the extent of the damage. No reports at the time mentioned any military casualties or impacts on intelligence infrastructure.
The revelation adds a new layer to an already significant strike and highlights the vulnerability of sensitive military and intelligence assets embedded within urban environments. Unit 9900 also operates a low-altitude drone unit that provides real-time battlefield intelligence, and produces detailed 3D mapping used by Israeli pilots and ground forces during operations in Gaza and Lebanon.
Given the facility’s proximity to the impact site, SpyTalk reported that it was highly likely the intelligence center itself was the intended target of the missile.
